new york beer

New York City

New York City! So much to see! So much to do!

The Big Apple Tips:

  • Have cash on you! Lots of places are cash only or have a high minimum for cards

  • Use the Subway to get around, it is super easy and convenient. Each ride costs $2.75, just get a card from any station and refill it as you need.

  • NYC is massive, plan to spend a good chunk of time in the city if you want to be able to truly explore.

  • La Guardia is a bit of a pain to fly in/out of because only cars/buses can get you there and it’s in the northeast corner of the city, plus they are doing a massive renovation right now making the traffic atrocious. At JFK you can take the Subway and therefore not have to worry about traffic. You can also fly into Newark as an option. From Newark you can take the train into Penn Station and then subway from there. Rideshares from Newark are particularly expensive because there are a lot of tolls to cross into the city.

  • Per usual I will remind you that it is much nicer to visit when it is warm outside and not in the dead of winter so that you can actually enjoy walking around the various boroughs.

  • Want a more slow paced and scenic adventure while you’re in the area? Head up to the Hudson Valley area! Check out my guide here.

Adventures & Ales Top Recommendations:

  • Other Half Brewing: A fantastic brewery with phenomenal beers. They are mostly an IPA brewery but they also make great Lagers and Stouts. Other Half has 3 locations in NYC:

    • Center Street: This is their original taproom. It is a small space and can get packed but it is a fun atmosphere.

    • Domino Park: A beautiful, modern taproom located right across from the river. Domino Park itself is across the street and is a beautiful park with great views.

    • Rockefeller Center: A small taproom in the heart of Manhattan. They have a beer garden in the summer months as well!

  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway: AMAZING! So magical. Highly recommend. If Harry Potter isn’t your thing (you’re crazy), I would still recommend seeing a show on Broadway for the experience.

  • Empire Fulton Park: Grab a bagel and a coffee and sit by the water admiring the skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge!

  • Torst: A killer beer bar with chill vibes and an insane tap list. Very sleek space with extremely nice staff and a small food menu. Pricey but worth it!

  • Fifth Hammer Brewing: Delicious beers, frequent food trucks, dog friendly. Located in Long Island City.

  • Beer Street: A great beer bar with two locations: the OG is located between Williamsburg and Greenpoint and Beer Street South in the Prospect Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. Beer Street is a small beer bar with a killer tap list, reasonable prices, and chill vibes. Beer Street South is much larger than the original space and has even more taps.

  • Proletariat: A small unassuming beer bar with 12 taps, some of which are local, some of which are not. They also have some cans and bottles to choose from.

  • Grimm Artisanal Ales: Tasty beers in a vibrant setting. This is a popular spot so it can be very packed and loud as a forewarning, but the beers are worth it!

  • Evil Twin Brewing: A top-notch brewery with two locations in NYC—Ridgewood and Dumbo. Ridgewood has a nice airy taproom and patio space but it is definitely a hike from most spots in the city. The Dumbo taproom has great views outside and both have similar tap lists.

  • Finback Brewery: Another great brewery with two locations—Glendale and Brooklyn. The Glendale taproom is their original spot and definitely off the beaten path. Their newer spot in Brooklyn is within walking distance of a bunch of other breweries and a cool space. They have a huge tap list at both spots full of great beers. In Brooklyn they also have a small food menu via Dumpling Up

touristy nyc things worth doing:

  • Central Park: The absolute “must” in NYC, but be forewarned it is absolutely massive! Plan ahead if there is something specific you want to see/do in the park. The Central Park Zoo, The Met, dog parks, and more are housed here.

    • Liberty Bagels is a touristy but delicious bagel spot nearby Central Park

  • Walk the Brooklyn Bridge: If you do it on a weekend mentally prepare yourself for hoards of people, but a must!

  • The Met: A fabulous art museum located in Central Park. Tickets are $25 and you can buy them online ahead of time to skip the line. The museum is massive, so plan to spend a good chunk of time here.

  • Bryant Park: It’s just another park, but it’s pretty and a nice place to sit and relax

  • Times Square: Honestly just walk through it once on your way from point A to point B to see the giant signs and shops, otherwise you don’t need to spend time here.

  • The High Line: An elevated park with tons of greenery. Beware it gets very packed!

    • The Standard is a beer garden on the High Line with limited hours.

  • Staten Island: Take the free ferry to SI—you don’t need a ticket or anything, just line up and board. On the way to SI you’ll want to be on the right side if you want to see the Statue of Liberty, left coming back. The ferry ride is ~25 minutes each way.

  • 9/11 Memorial and Museum: A somber visit to the World Trade Center recognizing the victims of 9/11.

  • Grand Central Terminal: A rail station that is absolutely beautiful inside!

  • Tenement Museum: Immigration museum with various exhibits and experiences. Buy tickets in advance or you might not get in!

Empire Fulton Park

Other NYC Things To Do:

  • Threes Brewing: A Lager-focused brewery making quite delicious beers. They have 5 taprooms across the city: Gowanus, Greenpoint, Governors Island, Huntington and Moynihan. The Gowanus taproom has a full food menu from their onsite kitchen The Meat Hook. They also have several guest beers and wines.

  • Talea Beer Co.: I visited their Williamsburg taproom which is a cute little spot with good beers. They also have a Cobble Hill taproom and a Grand Central space.

  • Wild East Brewing: This brewery is in the heart of Brooklyn and makes a wide variety of beers. They have a nice space and solid beers.

  • Interboro Spirits and Ales: A chill brewery with good beers and a small food menu. They are right around the corner from Grimm.

  • Devocion Coffeeshop: Several locations in NYC filled with plants and delicious coffee!

  • Kills Boro Brewing: They are on Staten Island and have super delicious beers. They have more dive bar vibes than brewery inside and a cute outdoor space.

  • Chuko: A solid spot for Ramen in Brooklyn. Right across from Bier Street South!

  • Baba Cool: A cute spot for breakfast, lunch or coffee! They have two locations: Fort Greene and Williamsburg.

  • Flagship Brewing: Another brewery on Staten Island with lots of games and a very chill space.

  • Chelsea Market: Food hall/shopping combo in an old warehouse.

  • Big aLICe Brewing: In Long Island City, this is a small brewery with average beers.

  • Rockaway Brewing: A small brewery near Fifth Hammer with 11 taps. They have a second location at Rockaway Beach.

  • East Harlem Bottling Co.: A beer bar and restaurant with a decent draft list, stop by if you’re in Harlem!

  • LIC Beer Project: A small brewery in Long Island City with solid beer options.

  • Pier 66: Frying Pan is a bar on the pier that has cute nautical vibes but is a bit pricey. It moves with the water so if you get seasick I would not advise it.

Skip:

  • The Charging Bull: it’s surrounded by tourists most of the time and nearly impossible to actually see. When you do catch a glimpse it’s not as exciting as the hype.

  • BierWax: A beer bar with two locations in Brooklyn and Queens. I was not super impressed here—they served my beer in a plastic cup, the staff was rude, they only offered 16oz pours and everything was very over priced.

  • Keg & Lantern: A brewpub with average beers and mediocre service. They have specials every day and a full food menu.

  • As Is: A beer bar in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood with mediocre service and mediocre food.

  • Strong Rope Brewing: Pricey, average beers.

Rochester, NY

Rochester is a really nice city full of fantastic food & drinks!

Their Bourbon Cream is their top seller, but they have a wide variety of spirits to choose from. They use all natural and local ingredients and aren’t afraid to go against the norm, such as with their award-winning citrus-forward Gin. They also make their own syrups, create canned cocktails, and host classes.

Strangebird Brewing

January 2023

Some people do dry January. This year I did what I would refer to as an underwater January. There were a lot of beers consumed between my birthday, Mosaic’s Puppy Pawty, bottle shares and more. This was the first month that I did not take a trip since the depths of Covid, so there was less brewery hopping but more high quality beers consumed.

This was also my first ever month of using Untappd so I now have super accurate data around my top beers which is really nice. I checked in 131 beers in January (!) and you can follow me on Untappd here.

Here were my top beers in January, in no particular order:

Kyle's Axe Imperial IPA

Kyle’s Axe collaboration brew from Fidens Brewing in Colonie, NY and Horus Aged Ales in Oceanside, CA

Kyle’s Axe is an Imperial IPA with Citra, Nelson and Peacharine hops. It comes in at 8% and is absolutely superb. This is potentially the best IPA I have ever had in my life. I had this brew twice and loved it both times.

The Bones of the Things Around Us collaboration brew from Fidens Brewing in Colonie, NY and Troon Brewing in Hopewell, NJ + Triple Jasper + Triple Jasper with Nelson from Fidens Brewing

3 juice bombs from the fine folks at Fidens! The Bones of the Things Around Us is a Double IPA with with Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Amarillo hops. Triple Jasper is a Triple IPA with Citra hops. Triple Jasper with Nelson is a Triple IPA with Citra and Nelson Sauvin hops. These were all insanely delicious beers that I was lucky enough to try a couple of times and loved! Fidens has been absolutely crushing the game lately.

Rye BBT

Beer: Barrel: Time (Rye 2022) from Side Project Brewing in Maplewood, MO

BBT Baby! I’ve had BBT once before but the rye version was new to me and exciting to get to try. This is one of the most hyped Stouts in the world so it is always a real treat to get to taste! From Side Project: “We finalized a blend which consisted of 2 different recipes, brewed 3 different times and then finished in 3 different barrels for 18 to 42 months. The younger portion represents threads which were brewed right around the 2020 release in plan to become part of this 2022 blend. The much older threads consist of the exact same brew/barrels from the 2020 release, barrels which we held back and allowed an extended aging. The result of this layering focuses this blend more in line with how we blend our BBT releases, with a showcase of our production over time, layering in age and youth in a way that can only come from time spent in a barrel. Derivation Blend #3 recipe aged in Willett 5 year Rye Barrels since 7/23/18; Vibes recipe aged in Willett 4 year Rye Barrels since 7/2/20; Vibes recipe aged in StilL630 Rye Barrels since 7/28/20.”

Double Dry Hopped Ghost, Holy Ghost and Infinite Ghost from Parish Brewing in Broussard, LA

Double Dry Hopped Ghost in the Machine is an Imperial IPA with Citra hops. Holy Ghost is a Triple IPA dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Galaxy and Citra Cryo. Infinite Ghost is an Imperial IPA with hand-selected Yakima Valley Citra hops and Citra Terpenes. The Anniversary Ghost releases are always superb! This year I had each can individually and then also did a blind side by side with my second can of each. My ranking blind was Infinite-Holy-DDH.

100 Citra Burley Oak

100 Triple Dry Hopped with Citra from Burley Oak Brewing in Berlin, MD

This is an all Citra Triple Dry Hopped Imperial IPA. The 100 series from Burley Oak focuses on a single hop at a time and this brew was fantastic. Citra is always a favorite but this was dangerously easy to drink.

The 12° from Lesser-Known Beer Company in Winston-Salem, NC

The 12° is a Czech inspired Pale Lager from the fine folks at Lesser-Known. Their Lagers are fantastic and I highly recommend a visit if you have not checked them out yet. Check out my Winston-Salem beer guide here.

Fonta Flora '22 Three Year Blend

‘22 Three Year Blend from Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton, NC

This is an Appalachian Gueuze-inspired three year blend of spontaneously fermented ales from the winters of 2018, 2019 and 2020. This is my favorite beer I have ever had from Fonta Flora. There are still some bottles floating around out there so be sure to snag one while you can!

Check back next month to see my top beers of February! Cheers—Alexis

June 2022

June’s top beers are mostly centered around my trip to New York, but I had some great beers in Charlotte too. Burial Beer also opened in CLT in June so it was a struggle to not list every one of their delicious beers that I had on tap! My top beers over the past month are listed below in no particular order:

Hudson Valley Brewing

Ultrasphere from Hudson Valley Brewery in Beacon, NY

Ultrasphere is a Sour IPA with raw wheat, malted oat, milk sugar, raspberry, vanilla and hopped with Citra & Mosaic. Hudson Valley is best known for their Sour IPAs so when I visited their brewery I knew I had to get a good selection of them. Ultrasphere is slightly sweet but not in an overpowering way and very easy to drink.

Homage Brewing

Peach Pink and Green Saison from Homage Brewing in Pomona, CA

This is a dry hopped, barrel aged Saison with falanghina grapes, masumoto peaches and Sabro hops. Homage was one of my favorite breweries I had at Green City, Other Half’s festival. This Saison was perfectly balanced and refreshing—I could easily drink a whole lot of this brew.

Weaver Hollow Salmagundi

Salmagundi Vol. 1 from Weaver Hollow Brewing in Andes, NY

Salmagundi is Weaver Hollow’s series of blended farmhouse ales. Volume 1 is a blend of a barrel-fermented Saison brewed with a single European malt and single European hop, aged for 6 months; and an herb beer brewed with hibiscus, lemon verbena, and kaffir lime leaves, which was fermented in stainless and aged extensively in French oak. Weaver Hollow is always a delight and I was thrilled to see the selection at Beer Street, a fantastic beer bar in NYC.

Root and Branch Brewing

Bone and Throat from Root and Branch Brewing in Copiague, NY

Bone and Throat is a dry hopped Double IPA from Root and Branch. After having a plethora of Root and Branch beers in cans it was very exciting to get to finally try their beers on draft. Root and Branch makes some of the most consistently delicious IPAs in the country.

Eighth State Brewing x Burial Beer

All You Know For Certain Is That You Know Absolutely Nothing At All collaboration beer from Burial Beer in Asheville, NC and The Eighth State Brewing in Greenville, SC

This is an Imperial Stout with pecans, toasted coconut, Thai banana, rum barrel aged orange zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, and Vanuatu vanilla bean. When Burial and Eighth State team up you know it is going to be something wild, and that is exactly what is happening here. Somehow all of the adjuncts come together perfectly to create a delectable, thiccc Stout that leaves you wanting more.

Saison Bernice SARA

Saison Bernice from Sante Adairius Rustic Ales in Capitola, CA

Saison Bernice is a Farmhouse Ale with multiple yeast additions, including Brettanomyces, and is further aged in the bottle. This was my second favorite beer at Green City, after Homage’s Saison. Saison Bernice is always a true pleasure to get to try—it is a perfect beer in my opinion.

The Beer formally known as La Tache from The Ale Apothecary in Bend, OR

The Beer Formerly Known as La Tache is a Table Sour made of malted barley, wheat, Goschie Farms Cascade Hops, honey and house lactobacillus culture. It then spends 3-9 months fermenting in barrels prior to a month-long dry-hopping in oak barrels. Everything The Ale Apothecary makes is unique and funky, and this was no exception. I was taken aback by just how fantastic this was.

Check Back next month to see what my top beers of July are! Cheers—Alexis

November 2021

November brought the least amount of beers I’ve drank in quite some time, so this month’s list is short and sweet! In no particular order, here are the top beers I had in November 2021:

Time is a Flat Circle collaboration brew from Heist Brewery in Charlotte, NC and Fidens Brewing Co. in Albany, NY

This is a Hazy Double IPA dry hopped with Rakau, Nelson Sauvin, and Motueka hops. A local collaboration with one of the hottest breweries in the country right now? Yes please! This is an absolute juice bomb and incredibly smooth.

Potato at New Origin Brewing Co in Asheville, NC

Potato is a New England IPA dry hopped with Idaho Gem and Citra hops. New Origin is Asheville’s newest brewery and they are already making waves. Their IPAs and Lagers were fantastic, I highly recommend checking them out next time you’re in AVL.

Like Whoa collaboration brew from Monkish Brewing in Torrance, CA, Other Half Brewing in New York, NY, and Trillium Brewing in Boston, MA

Like Whoa is an Imperial IPA with Citra, Galaxy, Motueka, Topaz, & Wai-iti hops. This is part of the Freaky Friday collaboration series and a true delight. That should come as no surprise given the three breweries involved!

LAX2JFK: In The Clouds collaboration brew from Monkish Brewing in Torrance, CA, Other Half Brewing in New York, NY, and Trillium Brewing in Boston, MA

LAX2JFK: In The Clouds is an Imperial Oat Cream IPA with Citra, Mosaic, Motueka, Simcoe, Citra Cryo, and Simcoe Cryo hops. This brew has incredible mouthfeel and is loaded with flavor thanks to that stacked hop profile. Yes this is the second beer on this month’s list that is a collaboration from Monkish, Other Half, and Trillium—this stacked team can do no wrong.

Deep Orbit Centaurus from Other Half Brewing in New York, NY

This is an Imperial Stout with vanilla, figs, almonds and cinnamon. Other Half’s Stouts are frequently overlooked and Deep Orbit is just another reminder that they can make more than Hazy IPAs. The adjunct combination is delightful and pairs nicely with the thick body of the base Stout.

Check back next month to see my top beers of december and my overall top beers of 2021! Cheers —Alexis

The Best Craft Beer Bars

Obviously I love exploring breweries, but craft beer bars are always fun to hang out at as well. I love getting to try hard to find or obscure beers from breweries across the world!

The Avenue Pub in New Orleans

The Avenue Pub

Located in New Orleans, Louisiana this craft beer haven is open 24/7 365 days of the year! The Avenue has a fantastic tap list at both their main bar downstairs and their balcony bar upstairs.

The balcony is one of the best parts of The Avenue, it is a fantastic place to kick back and watch the streetcars roll by and soak up some Louisiana sunshine. Their location right on Saint Charles Avenue makes it a prime spot to watch parades during Mardi Gras season, but beware of beads flying into your beer!

The Avenue also has a full food menu that is typical bar food. The cheese fries are fantastic, especially after a beer or two. If you’re local to New Orleans their Mug Club is a fun feature to earn discounts on beers and get invited to special events.

Polly and her team do a fantastic job at The Avenue so be sure to show them some love the next time you’re in The Big Easy! Take note that The Avenue is 21 and up only.
